El 1 de marzo viajamos junto a Rodolfo Nin a Montevideo; también lo hicieron varios integrantes de la Mesa Política del Frente Amplio y militantes frenteamplistas del departamento; asumía la Presidencia de la Cámara de Diputados el Dr. Luis Alfredo Fratti.
Bien valió la pena el viaje. La ceremonia de asunción tuvo varias cosas que importa resaltar.
Asumía la Presidencia de la Cámara de Representantes, parte de uno de los poderes del Estado, un hijo de Cerro Largo. Quizás por primera vez, un político de nuestro departamento llegaba a ese sitio, uno de los de mayor destaque del sistema democrático de nuestra República. Posiblemente, quedará marcado como un hito de la historia política de Cerro largo; seguramente las nuevas generaciones de políticos departamentales lo recordarán como hoy se recuerda a destacados legisladores que trascendían fronteras locales, sin ir muy atrás, al Dr. Mayo , Dr. Alember t Vaz, Jorge Silveira Zabala, Rodney Arismendi , el Piola Héctor Silveira Díaz, al Dr. Heber Da Rosa y, por supuesto, Rodolfo Nin, que fue Vicepresidente y, por lo tanto, Pte. de la Asamblea General y del Senado.
Lo cierto es que hoy le toca ejercer la Presidencia de la Cámara de Representantes al Canario Fratti.
El hecho en sí era propicio para el regocijo, un diputado del Interior, un hombre nacido y criado en campaña llegaba a ese cargo; también era de destaque que lo hiciera siendo diputado de la oposición, hecho inusual en las democracias de América Latina. Uruguay desde hace algún tiempo, no siempre fue así, alterna la Presidencia de la Cámara de Diputados entre los partidos según su caudal electoral, sin importar, como en este caso, que lo haga un representante de la oposición; eso también es expresión del funcionamiento de una democracia plena y motivo de regocijo. Algo que debería observar nuestra Junta Departamental.
Decía que concurrimos junto a Rodolfo Nin; él quería estar presente para apoyar lo que será una gestión compleja. Rodolfo, como ya dijimos, también es uno de los políticos formados en Cerro Largo al que le tocó ocupar el cargo más alto que haya tenido alguien del departamento, máximo cargo electo después del de Presidente de la República, y también lo hizo en representación del Frente Amplio, seguramente para Fratti su presencia fue importante.
Otro aspecto a destacar es que estaba en la barra de honor el Intendente de Cerro Largo José Yurramendi, junto a Nin y al Senador Sergio Botana; en el hemiciclo ocupando su banca la Dra. Carmen Tort. Algún legislador destacó el hecho. Había en la asunción de Fratti tres hijos de Cerro Largo que habían sido Intendentes del Departamento, más el actual, otro hecho para el regocijo democrático.
Destaco el compromiso del nuevo Pte. de la Cámara de hacer una gestión de cara al interior del país, con los oídos bien abiertos al acontecer de los sectores productivos del campo y también de esa enorme cantidad de micro y pequeñas empresas que le dan vida al comercio y servicios en nuestro interior y, por supuesto, a los trabajadores que realizan las más diversas actividades.
Se comprometió a trabajar junto a los Intendentes de manera de acercar la tarea legislativa a la gente, en especial a la del interior.
También ese compromiso fue motivo de regocijo.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it
to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
