No somos productores de vacunas, nuestra sociedad no promueve el desarrollo científico para tener un salvavidas propio en caso de pandemia. Ensalzamos la cultura agropecuaria, muchas veces con menosprecio a las demás actividades, porque repetimos que nos da qué comer y nos abre mercados en el mundo. Bien o mal es así.
Tenemos una sociedad enfocada en la producción de materias primas, y aún existiendo todas las demás actividades son marginales, incluyendo la generación de productos tecnológicos y científicos. Habrá que cambiarlo, si salimos de esta ya lo veremos -porque a los golpes se aprende- pero hoy enfrentamos la pandemia con esta debilidad estructural, que como veremos al final no es la única.
Dependemos de un mercado mundial de vacunas donde las naciones más ricas y desarrolladas científicamente aseguran las vacunas primero para su gente. Los demás países nos debemos administrar con lo que logremos conseguir afuera. Eso nos impone jugar en terreno gigante, extraño y hostil.
A pesar de todo. en un mes y medio de vacunación los uruguayos hemos logrado meternos entre los ocho países en el mundo que han logrado dar al menos una dosis de vacuna su población. Hasta el sábado hemos logrado vacunar al 23,77% de nosotros, cuando el promedio de vacunación mundial recién alcanzaba el 5,53%. Nuestros vecinos Argentina y Brasil en empate técnico -ninguno pasa del 9,9% de su población- arrean cola en la región y solo sirven para demostrar que los extremos se tocan.
Con mayor población que Uruguay solo nos supera en vacunación Israel, el Reino Unido, Chile, Estados Unidos, Hungría y Serbia. Es ahí donde Uruguay se vuelve a colar en los octavos de final del mundo por recuperar la Salud Mundial y nuestras vidas.
Sin embargo los contagios en Uruguay no paran de subir. La buena administración de la vacuna y el personal de la Salud la vienen peleando metro a metro y han dejado el alma en la cancha, pero solos no pueden frenar el contragolpe de la enfermedad.
El país necesita que cada uno de nosotros asuma el compromiso de bajar nuestra propia movilidad, las medidas restrictivas tomadas no son vacaciones, hemos sacrificado la presencialidad educativa que moviliza un millón de personas por día, comprometiendo el futuro de todos los gurises, para frenar la movilidad general, no para que salgas a pasear.
Se restringió al máximo histórico la actividad del Poder Judicial, nuestra justicia prácticamente se paralizó para bajar la movilidad general, dejando en un limbo los derechos de cientos de miles de personas que dependen de que el sistema de justicia funcione.
Suspendimos los espectáculos públicos, nos privamos de todos ellos para bajar la movilidad general. Hemos limitados actividades no indispensables, con el sacrificio económico que le imponemos a las pequeñas y medianas empresas y a los artistas –sacrificio que tenemos que atender y reparar en forma- para bajar la movilidad. Hay quienes proponen cerrar también bares y restaurantes para bajar nuestros contactos y veremos si no se termina llegando a eso también. Yo pienso que el país no tiene vocación de carcelero, y que tampoco puede encerrarnos a todos contra nuestra voluntad, porque no tiene cómo hacerlo, somos un país chico no tenemos esos recursos.
El avance notable en la vacunación no resiste el contragolpe de los contagios desatados. El virus pasa de persona a persona y hay que bloquearlo, solo bajando nuestros contactos interpersonales al mínimo tenemos chance, estamos corriendo un gravísimo riesgo de que la epidemia nos derrote.
Si somos capaces de suspender nuestros contactos fuera del hogar al máximo posible y sudar así la camiseta 30 días más, habremos empatado el partido.
Sea cual sea el resultado final, mi reconocimiento y homenaje a los miles y miles de uruguayos que han venido poniendo su parte.
